SAP Support Pack Upgrade

An up-to-date SAP system is essential for highly regulated industries. Outdated software causes project delays, higher maintenance costs, security issues, and more. These problems affect day-to-day operations and jeopardize regulatory compliance and data integrity.
This case study explores the successful upgrade of a company’s SAP ECC system from Support Pack 15 to Support Pack 22. The company, which operates in the Life Sciences sector, faced the challenge of modernizing its system to:
  • Enhance performance
  • Meet regulatory requirements
  • Support ongoing business needs
  • Reduce security vulnerabilities
  • We cover how the DIGIT team built a smoother and more efficient SAP environment. This upgrade was essential for the company to deliver high-quality products and services.

The client was seven SAP ECC updates behind and had a complex infrastructure.
Solution
Upgrade SAP ECC from SP15 to SP22 with minimal disruption to business operations.

Challenge

The company needed a critical upgrade to improve SAP ECC system performance, security, and functionality. Their system was seven updates behind and at risk of failure during the upgrade process.
We undertook the challenge of performing risk-based testing for a seamless transition. Our goal was to execute this complex upgrade and minimize any disruptions to the company’s ongoing business operations.
This involved detailed test planning prior to execution. So that we could identify and address potential issues before they impacted the daily workflow.

Solution

DIGIT implemented an upgrade of the SAP ECC system from Support Pack 15 to Support Pack 22. The project went through eight key phases. These systematically approached phases helped upgrade the SAP ECC system to meet current performance and security standards.

1. Initial Assessment and Planning

Our team conducted a detailed assessment of the current SAP scope to understand specific requirements and potential challenges. Then, we developed a customized upgrade plan. It included timelines, resources, and risk mitigation strategies.

2. Preparation and Environment Setup

In the second stage, we prepared the system and ensured all prerequisites were met for the upgrade. A dedicated project environment for development and testing was used to ensure that there are multiple cycles of applying and testing SAP notes prior to production roll out.

3. Upgrade Execution

We performed the SAP Support Pack upgrade from SP15 to SP22. Our team utilized best practices for a smooth and efficient upgrade process. We mainly focused on keeping all the company’s business processes steady and minimizing impacts to any other enhancement projects running in parallel.

4. End-to-End System Testing

We conducted comprehensive end-to-end system testing. It included unit,
regression, user acceptance, and validation testing. Eventually, all
functionalities were working as expected.
Testing was performed across DEV, TEST, and Quality environments using the
Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) platform. All testing processes and
results were documented for transparency and future reference.

5. Defect Resolution

During testing, we ensured all defects were tracked, managed, and resolved
promptly using the ALM platform. All defects were documented. Fixes were
aligned with the business and system quality team, followed by the IT and user
testing.

6. Hypercare Support

Our team provided intensive support immediately following the upgrade to
address any post-upgrade issues. We closely monitored the system for stability
and performance.

7. Transition to Support

A smooth transition from the hypercare phase to regular support operations was
facilitated. We provided essential training and documentation. The company’s
team was equipped to manage the upgraded system.

8. Ongoing Support and Optimization

DIGIT offered ongoing support to maintain the system and address any future
issues. We assisted in implementing the annual SAP Support Pack maintenance
process to ensure the client’s system remained up to date. We also equipped
the client’s internal team to manage future upgrades independently. Our team
remains available for ongoing support if needed.

Results

The implementation of this two-level detection and classification system provided several key benefits:
The upgrade was a success with minimal defects and no disruptions to critical shipment and manufacturing processes, and ongoing enhancement projects. Over eight months, the project was accomplished within budget and schedule constraints.
During the hypercare phase, the results were impressive:
  • Fewer than ten minor defects were reported. None of them were critical or impacted core system functions.
  • Most of the issues encountered were related to the new SAP authorization rules. We resolved them in collaboration with the SAP security team. For instance, some user access permissions were not correctly aligned with the new rules. But these were promptly adjusted to restore normal functionality.
This project proved the effectiveness of our methodology for managing complex system upgrades. The key components of this smooth transition were:
  • Our risk-based testing approach
  • A strategic balance of formal and informal testing methods
Proactive identification of potential issues before they could escalate maintained system stability and compliance. Thus, we ultimately delivered a successful upgrade with minimal impact on daily operations.
